Bob Lipsyte on Writing Black Superman’s Obit & Kavitha Davidson

Only one man who could write the New York Times obituary of Muhammad Ali. Bob Lipsyte covered Ali for 52 years and continues our special week of coverage for The Champ. Then, writer and commentator Kavitha Davidson speaks about Ali’s cultural impact and examines the possible link between two degenerative brain diseases: Parkinson’s, which plagued Ali, and CTE, which is detected in the brains of more and more football players. Our closing song today is by Johnny Wakelin & The Kinshasa Band, “Black Superman, Muhammad Ali.”

State of The Sports Union & The Best Guests Of 2015

“Life moves pretty fast…if you don’t stop and look around once in a while…you could miss it.” Wise words from Ferris Bueller animate the year’s final episode, where we revisit our favorite Edge of Sports guests of 2015. You’ll hear from musicians Chuck D and John Legend, Orioles owner John Angelos, NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith, journalist Jeanne Marie Laskas and NBA Champion Samaki Walker, the first NBA player to ply his trade in Syria. Also, Dave delivers his film review of ‘Concussion’ and gives his inaugural “State of the Sports Union.” We have big plans for the new year, starting with a trip to LA and an interview with NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Please send your questions and interview topics to or tweet Dave at Thanks for listening, and have a safe & happy New Year.
